For our VCT, we were asked to bring in an example of a text and image combination that we found interesting, and to share it with the class.
I was casually flicking through a “design events” booklet. I only had it half in mind to look for something for VCT, when this jumped right out at me. In comparison to all the other dull, lifeless pages, this seemed rigorously active. I guess it was doing it’s job pretty well, because after all, the intention of any designer is to catch the eye of the viewer. Not only did it catch my eye, I got quite drawn in.
To be quite honest, I’ve been looking at it for a really long time, and I still don’t really grasp the concepts. I’m still not sure that it was designed to be understood. It’s all very mysterious.
I mentioned in class that I enjoyed the use of colour and material. It seems minimalist to me but oh so striking! In my opinion, the composition of text and image work really well together, complementing eachother through colour and layout.
I learnt something extremely valuable today. I observed that one will never ever gain as much from a piece of art, without sharing it. A person may see something, analyse it, and think that they did a pretty good job at the analysis too. That may very well be the case, but no two pair of eyes will ever perceive anything in the same way .
Whilst attending the VCT and talking about each persons item that they brought in, I saw that every person, without a doubt, received useful information from another person in the room that they had not seemed to include themselves.
They may have presented well, but there is always something to add, and not only our teachers but our peers too can be of great assistance with that. This is a really big lesson that we can all learn from and put to use in the coming years of study and work. Rather than being self righteous and arrogant about our ability to understand and evaluate what we see, we have been granted the gift of being surrounded by others, and any contribution from the outside is something that is truly priceless.
